Mysore Expressway, Karnataka: Route, Features, Connectivity, Nearby Areas

The old road between Bengaluru and Mysuru on NH-275 used to carry the full burden of being simultaneously a local road, a tourist highway, and a major commercial freight corridor — with every vehicle from a bullock cart to a Volvo bus sharing the same tarmac through Ramanagara, Channapatna, Maddur, and Mandya. The drive took anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on traffic, and the towns along the way — particularly Channapatna and Mandya — were notorious pinch points where the road narrowed, markets spilled onto the carriageway, and speeds dropped to walking pace.

The Bengaluru-Mysuru Access-Controlled Expressway on NH-275, inaugurated by PM Modi on March 12, 2023, resolved this permanently. The 119-kilometre, six-lane access-controlled expressway — built at a cost of approximately ₹3,900 crore under the Bharatmala Pariyojana with a 60 percent brownfield upgrade and 40 percent greenfield alignment — reduced the Bengaluru-Mysuru journey to 75 to 90 minutes. The greenfield portions include a 22-kilometre bypass combining Ramanagara and Channapatna, an 8-kilometre bypass for Mandya, a 10-kilometre bypass for Srirangapatna, and a 4-kilometre bypass for Maddur — eliminating the worst urban choke points while serving the corridor’s population through properly designed interchanges.

Toll collection operates at three plazas — Kaniminike, Sheshagirihalli, and Gananguru. Rates from April 1, 2025 (third revision since opening): Cars on Bengaluru-Nidaghatta section ₹180 one-way, ₹270 return; Nidaghatta-Mysuru cars ₹160 one-way, ₹240 return; full Bengaluru-Mysuru one-way for cars ₹330. The expressway includes 69 bus bays, 49 underpasses, 13 overpasses, and fencing throughout its full length.

Route and Location

The expressway begins at Nayandahalli junction in Bengaluru, running southwestward toward Ramanagara, Channapatna, Maddur, Mandya, Srirangapatna, and finally Mysuru. The corridor runs through Karnataka’s historically and commercially significant Mysore Plateau — passing through the Cauvery River basin and the sugarcane fields of Mandya district.

Connectivity

At Bengaluru, the expressway connects to NICE Road (Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises), the 48-km Bengaluru peripheral ring road, and through it to Electronic City and the tech corridor. At Mysuru, connections extend toward Coorg (Kodagu), Ooty (NH-181), and the wider Cauvery basin highway network.

Nearby Areas

Channapatna — Karnataka’s toy town, famous for lacquerware toys crafted in the GI-tagged traditional style — is bypassed but accessible from the expressway. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary near Srirangapatna, one of Karnataka’s most significant waterbird nesting sites, is adjacent to the corridor. The Mysore Palace — one of India’s most visited heritage sites and the seat of the Wadiyar dynasty — is the expressway’s iconic destination.
